How is this calculated?
The calculator estimates how long the excavator and operator need, based on volume and the output of a mini excavator, and adds machine transport, materials and truck trips.
Output is based on general figures for a 3-tonne excavator: the bucket holds about 0.06–0.09 m³, one cycle takes 12–18 seconds and real working time is about 45–50 minutes per hour. For trenching we assume about 5–6 m³ per hour in normal soil, and less when working close to a house.
Soil and access change the output. Clay and rock slow the work down, and tight access means more repositioning of the machine.
Materials are calculated in tonnes from volume: sand under pipes and pavers, base course for fill and drainage gravel for drains. Material prices are based on P. Blöndal's rates and Steypustöðin's list prices. The truck carries up to 15 tonnes of material or 10 m³ of excavated soil per trip.
The estimate is shown as a range from 90% to 130% of the calculated price, because conditions are never exactly as on paper. Disposal fees, pipes and pavers are not included.
